Mobile phones come in all shapes, sizes and prices but, sometimes, all we need is a basic mobile phone with essential features and a really nice price. The Nokia 1661 has a colour screen, a built-in FM radio, a relatively large amount of memory, a speakerphone for hands-free use, polyphonic ringtones, games and can store hundreds of contacts. It may lack some advanced features found in more expensive phones like a camera, a slot for memory cards and Bluetooth. But, for around Rs 1600, the Nokia 1661 is hard to beat. And, when you think of it, it can even be used as a backup phone, say, when your principal mobile phone breaks down or is completely discharged. I heartily recommend getting the Nokia 1661. Or even two. It's so cheap.

Nokia 2700 classic

Money does not grow on trees and a mobile phone need not be very expensive to be good. The Nokia 2700 classic has an excellent 320 x 240 colour screen, an FM radio, a microSD memory card slot for music (MP3 and MP4/AAC) and for video (3GP and MP4). It supports Bluetooth and can send MMS (Multimedia Message Service). It has a 2 megapixels camera which can record video at 176 x 144 which is, let us be frank, just acceptable. To compensate, the Nokia 2700 classic runs the excellent Opera Mini web browser and Internet browsing is perfectly acceptable even though the screen is on the small scale. Additional applications and games can easily be downloaded and installed on the phone as it is fully Java compliant. The Nokia 2700 is (really) a classic!

2009 is the year touchscreen technology becomes mainstream. Sure, it was available before on ultra-expensive phones but, for the first time, a phone costing less than Rs 8000 has a touchscreen... and it looks beautiful! The Samsung S5233 might lack 3G but the rest is just great: the colour screen has a resolution of 240 x 400 and is 3" big. The S5233 has a 3.2 megapixels camera which records video at 320 x 240. The 50Mb internal memory can be easily expanded with memory cards. The phone plays MP3 and MP4/AAC audio as well as MP4/H264 and WMV video. The S5233 has FM radio, a good Internet browser and runs Java applications. It can even display Word, Excel, Powerpoint and PDF documents! It really does a lot.
